How the JI process works

For organizations

I need design services

Use these guidelines if your nonprofit or humanitarian organization needs architecture or engineering support for a community project.

Requirements

  • You represent a legitimate nonprofit or humanitarian organization.
  • Your project has a clear community need and program.
  • You have secured or identified the project site.
  • You have partial construction funding and a realistic plan for the balance.
  • Your team can provide site information, make decisions, and communicate consistently in English.
  • You can host a Journeyman team for a site assessment and make a project-coordination contribution.

What happens next

    Submit your project

    Share your organization, community need, site, program, budget, and schedule.

  2. 02

    Project review

    JI confirms that the project is ready and that design support would be useful.

  3. 03

    Design

    Your organization provides local knowledge, makes decisions, and reviews the team's work.

  4. 04

    Local approval

    You arrange local professional review, permits, funding, contractors, and construction oversight.

JI typically provides preliminary drawings and a project design book. Licensed professionals in the project country must review and approve the design before construction.

Use these guidelines if you want to contribute architecture, engineering, construction, or related design skills.

Requirements

  • You are a student, professional, mentor, or firm in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related field.
  • You can commit enough time to communicate reliably and complete high-quality work.
  • You are willing to follow community priorities, local context, and Journeyman's design process.
  • You understand that this is volunteer service, not a source of personal or commercial gain.

What happens next

    Team match

    JI matches accepted volunteers with a suitable project, team, and mentor when needed.

    Design

    You collaborate with the organization and produce the agreed drawings and design materials.

    You organize the final files and support local professionals during their review.
