Journeyman designed a welcoming cultural center where Azizi Life’s artisan partners can teach, demonstrate their craft, welcome visitors, and connect rural Rwandan makers with fair-trade markets.

The story of a basket does not begin on a shelf.
It begins on a hillside—with sisal and sweetgrass, practiced hands, and knowledge passed from one maker to another. Azizi Life wanted visitors to encounter that whole story: not simply buy a finished object, but meet the people, skills, and culture behind it.
Azizi Life had grown into a family of connected social enterprises: fair-trade craft production, cultural experience days, shops, and studio classes. The new center needed to bring those activities together without losing the relationships at their heart.

Journeyman’s design gathers a café, shop, training and demonstration spaces around welcoming outdoor rooms. Courtyards and patios turn arrival into an invitation: watch, ask questions, share a meal, and understand how craft moves from local material to global market.
More than a marketplace
Every visit carries the work farther.
Azizi Life partners with rural artisan groups across Rwanda, connecting makers to fair-trade income and international customers. Cultural experiences add another kind of exchange: artisans become hosts and teachers, and visitors leave with a relationship to the place—not only a souvenir from it.
The design makes the supply chain visible. Workshop, demonstration, retail, hospitality, and gathering spaces let visitors follow an object from raw local material through skilled production to its finished form. Commerce becomes a conversation, and the building becomes a bridge between rural makers and the wider world.
