The story
A civic institute for dialogue on difficult ground.
The G. P. Koirala Foundation proposed an institute in Kathmandu where leaders, journalists, activists, women’s groups, and community organizations could meet around peace, democracy, and sustainable development. The site in peri-urban Gokarneshwor brings a steep terrain and the seismic risk made unmistakable by Nepal’s 2015 earthquake. The design therefore has two responsibilities: create open, dignified settings for dialogue and training, and organize them within a resilient, buildable structure suited to the land.
Meeting rooms, learning spaces, resources, and public gathering are intended to support both formal programs and the informal conversations through which trust develops. Journeyman International’s work connects the Foundation’s civic mission to site planning, access, and an architectural language respectful of Kathmandu Valley’s cultural context without imitating it superficially. The project remains a proposal. Its central idea is that peace-building needs physical infrastructure too—a reliable place where people with different roles and perspectives can gather, learn, and continue the patient work of democratic life.
