Hut2Hut

Hut2Hut was conceived in rural Rubagabaga as a compact guest cottage whose revenue could support Empowering Villages’ local development work. The project pairs hospitality with a clear economic purpose: visitors gain a place to stay close to the community, while proceeds are directed toward initiatives identified and led locally. The architecture is intentionally modest, drawing on familiar forms, local materials, passive ventilation, shade, and a close relationship to the landscape rather than importing a resource-intensive resort model. A small footprint reduces construction and operating demands and makes maintenance more realistic.

Journeyman International’s role was to help turn the social-enterprise concept into an eco-cottage that could be replicated or adapted as demand grew. The archive does not verify completion, so Hut2Hut remains a proposal. Its strength is in scale and alignment—one carefully designed accommodation unit can become useful development infrastructure when ownership, maintenance, guest experience, and the destination of revenue are considered together from the outset.
