Inclusive Primary Boarding School for the Deaf

In Rugu Village, the Inclusive Primary Boarding School for the Deaf was proposed as Tanzania’s first primary residential campus designed specifically around deaf students. Classrooms, dormitories, dining, play, and food-production areas form one daily environment, reducing the barriers created when education and housing are separated by long travel. Visual connection, clear sightlines, generous circulation, daylight, and places for signing face to face are fundamental to the plan. Residential spaces balance supervision with privacy, while gardens and productive landscape connect school life to food and practical learning.

Journeyman International worked with the local partner to translate educational and residential needs into a purpose-built campus rather than adapt a hearing-centered school after the fact. The archive does not verify construction, so this remains a proposal. Its architectural premise is inclusion through first principles: design communication, movement, safety, and community around the students who will use the place, then let the campus support academic learning, friendship, and increasing independence.
