The story
A maternity ward designed to be repeated without becoming generic.
Jungle Medical Missions and Third Lens asked Journeyman International to develop a maternity-ward prototype that could serve both rural and urban communities in Uganda. Replication demands discipline: clinical flows, privacy, sanitation, staff visibility, newborn care, and emergency access must remain clear, while orientation, materials, and site services need to adapt locally. The proposal organizes labor, delivery, recovery, support, and family areas as a compact sequence intended to reduce conflict between patients, staff, supplies, and waste. Natural light and ventilation support comfort where reliable mechanical systems may be limited, but infection control and clinical function remain primary.
The archive contains architectural drawings but does not establish that the prototype was constructed at multiple sites. It should therefore be understood as a design tool—a tested spatial framework that local teams can review and modify. Its goal is not to promise outcomes through architecture alone, but to make safer, more supportive childbirth facilities easier to plan, fund, and build where they are needed.
