A school campus that includes the teachers who sustain it.
Near Magwi, Mairo Primary School was proposed with Omilling Villages and Hope Ofiriha to serve roughly 1,200 students. Nicole Thompson’s design includes eight classrooms, eight teacher homes, six toilet blocks, a kitchen, and administration—recognizing that education depends on sanitation, food, staffing, and daily operations as much as classroom walls. The campus plan distributes these pieces across the site while using shade, ventilation, and protected outdoor movement to respond to South Sudan’s climate. Teacher housing is particularly strategic in a rural setting where retaining staff can determine whether new classrooms remain useful.
Journeyman International supported the site analysis, precedent research, schematic work, and final design package. The 2014–15 book documents a detailed design and construction proposal, not verified completion. Its architectural strength is completeness without excess: provide the essential network that lets a large primary school function reliably and makes learning possible for students, teachers, and the households connected to both.
