A medical center shaped by Bamako’s river, climate, and resources.
The Mali Medical Center proposal begins with research into the Niger River and the environmental systems that sustain life around Bamako. Water, soil, food, heat, waste, and access are treated as design conditions for healthcare rather than background information. The facility is organized for clear patient flow, durable construction, shaded waiting, natural ventilation where clinically appropriate, sanitation, and service areas that local staff can operate. Research into reuse and locally available resources informed an effort to reduce dependence on costly imported systems without compromising basic medical function.
Journeyman International’s role was to support a facility responsive to a real rural healthcare need and the practical limits of maintenance and infrastructure. The archive contains substantial research but limited readable final clinical documentation and does not verify construction, so the project remains a proposal. Its central architectural principle is context before form: understand the environmental and operational systems on which care depends, then make a building that can work reliably within them.
