The story
Hydropower becomes a classroom for farming and village life.
Near the Rubagabaga River hydropower plant, Empowering Villages proposed two connected facilities: a flexible community center for programs and recreation, and an Agricultural Center of Excellence for practical farming instruction. With Foundations for Farming, the training program would demonstrate permaculture, composting, soil care, and animal husbandry, helping farmers explore paths from subsistence toward reliable commercial production. The site plan connects instruction to fields and keeps shared community functions close enough to use the same infrastructure and energy investment.
Journeyman International’s work was informed by firsthand site experience and by Rwandan precedents in health, education, and community design. The archive includes final presentation material but does not verify construction, so the project remains a proposal. Its central architectural idea is visible learning: farming methods, energy, water, gathering, and recreation form one working landscape where people can observe systems, practice them, and decide what is useful locally.
