The story
A village school becomes the beginning of a more connected street.
In Talatast, the Association Assafou envisioned preschool education and women’s enterprise as parts of one village strategy. The proposal rehabilitates a vacant vernacular house below the potters’ square, strengthening its timber, stone, and earth-brick construction with a concrete frame where needed. A preschool classroom occupies the ground floor, while an upstairs embroidery workshop gives women a dedicated place to learn, produce, and organize.
The larger plan imagines neighboring houses becoming craft workshops, extending a walkable commercial street from the square to a courtyard and overlook facing the High Atlas. Rather than treating tourism as an isolated attraction, the design links visitors to daily village life and to a wider route connecting Talatast, Sidi El Wafi, and Tighdouine. The documents require local architectural and engineering review and do not confirm construction, so this remains a developed proposal rooted in local materials, skills, education, and community-led economic activity.
