The first place in a larger vision

Sunzu's long-term plan began with one practical promise: create a shared place where children and adults could read, study, meet, and build skills close to home. The library was designed as the social anchor for everything that might follow.
Its brick walls, broad veranda, daylight, and simple classrooms respond directly to the rural hillside. The architecture is modest by design. What makes it powerful is the range of life it can hold—and the fact that the first phase is now built and being used.
Books—and a wider world
The library supports more than quiet reading. Bookshelves, shared tables, laptops, and flexible teaching space let children move between independent discovery and learning together. A civic building becomes everyday educational infrastructure.
Life inside
Inside, children take turns at the blackboard, follow lessons together, and learn from one another. These ordinary moments are the clearest measure of the design: a useful room, shaped around attention, participation, and belonging.
More than a classroom
The library and its veranda also give community life a visible home. Learning, performance, gathering, and local traditions can occupy the same generous threshold—exactly the kind of shared civic energy the larger Sunzu master plan was meant to support.
The library is complete and active. The wider master plan remains a phased vision, intended to grow as community priorities and resources allow.
Continuing partnership
Each commission advances a different part of Sunzu's community-led plan, from learning and water access to a shared hall and locally rooted tourism.

Proposed
Sunzu Village occupies steep ground above Lake Burera, where dramatic views also reveal the central water challenge: the nearest dependable source lies far below the homes and community facilities that need it.
In construction
Beside Sunzu's completed library, a second community anchor is taking shape. Local leaders and the village's Pentecostal church identified the need for a larger, flexible place where people can worship, learn, play, make music, and gather, with room for early-childhood activities during the week.
Proposed
Overlooking Lake Burera and Volcanoes National Park, the Sunzu Village EcoLodge was conceived as the economic phase of a broader community master plan.
